General Overview of Ketogenic Dietary Therapies

Her research has been targeted at improving outcomes in early-onset epilepsy, specifically in assessing the role of surgery and ketogenic diet. Professor Cross is the elected Treasurer of the International League Against Epilepsy, Clinical Advisor to the National Children’s Epilepsy Surgery Service, and Clinical Advisor to the update of the NICE guidelines for Childhood Epilepsy 2018-2021.
She was also instrumental in setting up the European Reference Network for Rare and Complex Epilepsies called EpiCare of which she is the joint co-ordinator. She was awarded ILAE/IBE Ambassador for Epilepsy in 2007, and is the recipient of the American Academy of Neurology Sydney Carter Award, The International Child Neurology Association Frank Ford Award and the American Epilepsy Clinical Research Award.
Professor Cross was awarded an OBE in the Queen’s Birthday Honours in 2015, and most recently has been elected as President of the International League Against Epilepsy for 4 years starting in 2021.

Elles J.T.M van der Louw, RD, PhD, works as a senior dietitianat the Erasmus MC- Sophia Children’s Hospital, Rotterdam, the Netherlands. She is specialised in diets for metabolic diseases and Ketogenic Diet Treatment in refractory epilepsy and cancer in both children and adults. The Multidisciplinairy Ketogenic Team of the Erasmus MC- Sophia has treated more than 275 (very young) children with all types of the Ketogenic Diet.
She recently got her PhD (2020) on research titled: Ketogenic Diet Treatment Advancing Indications, Management and Outcomes. She is president of Matthews Friends NetherlandsFlanders and chair of the Dutch Keto dietitians group.
As an international Keto Coach she helps dietitians and teams to implement KDT in their daily practice, to improve their skills and/or to improve the efficacy of KDT.
She is author of the Dutch Dietary guideline of the Ketogenic Diet in children with refractory epilepsy (2007 and 2010), Super Vet cooking book (2013), Ketogenic Diet guidelines for infants with refractory epilepsy (2016), Recommendations for Ketogenic Parenteral Nutrition in children with drug resistant epilepsy (2018) and coordinating author of the Dutch National clinical carepath of the Ketogenic Diet in children with refractory epilepsy and/or metabolic diseases (2014).

Victoria has worked as a paediatric dietitian for 14 years, specialising in ketogenic diet therapy for the last 7 years. In 2012 she joined the Royal Manchester Childrens Hospital and established the ketogenic diet service by creating a business case and securing permanent funding.
Since then the service has grown to one of the largest centres within the UK and covers neurology and metabolic conditions. She has a particular interest in research and sits as co-chair on the Ketogenic Dietitians Research Network.

I am a trainee Advanced Clinical Practitioner at Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH) working in the epilepsy and neurology service. I currently am in the final stages of my master’s in advanced clinical practice at London South Bank University. This is allowing me to develop my skills and knowledge to provide more holistic care for neurology inpatients and outpatients.
I specialised in ketogenic diets in paediatric epilepsy and GLUT1 as a dietitian over the past 8 years at both GOSH and Birmingham Children’s Hospital. She is co-secretary of the Ketogenic Dietitians Research Network and an active member of KETOpag.

I am a dedicated professional with 30 years of nursing experience. I completed my nursing training at Great Ormond Street Children’s Hospital where I gained experience in several specialities but found my true passion was in the neurosciences. My particular fields of interests are epilepsy, neurorehabilitation and complex health needs.
I have worked within hospital and community settings in the NHS and private sector.’ have a record of managing busy, complex caseloads, strong problem-solving skills and being a compassionate patient advocate. I have supported NICE (National Institute for Health and Care Excellence) in the development of the latest Epilepsies in children, young people and adult’s guideline. I provide VIZ and Epilepsy Nurse Consultant clinics and training nationally about epilepsy, treatments, emergency medication and the impact epilepsy has on the person and people who care for them. I am passionate about training, raising awareness of epilepsy and working alongside my patients and their families to ensure they meet their full potential.
